Beautiful Beaufort

Thanks for coming back to read this week’s post. I’m writing from Beaufort, NC and we have been here for the past 4 days. Prior to entering the Beaufort inlet we had a 3 day passage from St. Augustine. The passage felt very long to me because I was seasick for most of it and nausea makes time pass very slowly for me. Since I wasn’t feeling well for most of the passage I ended up staying in the cockpit the entire way to NC so I got to spend plenty of time with everyone. The crew was also having a difficult time because some of the others also got seasick. While on passage, we saw plenty of flying fish jump out of the water along with dolphins that swam along with the boat. Bobby also hooked a Mahi that was at least 30 pounds but we unfortunately didn’t get the catch because the gaff wasn’t sharp enough.

When we all got to land the first thing that we did was take showers. I can speak for everyone on this by saying the shower felt sooooo refreshing. Then we went to Royal James Cafe and enjoyed their signature burgers, and everyone thought that they tasted amazing. After that, we explored the town. Jamin and I ended up separating from the crew to visit a museum nearby, and we were joined by Auntie (Ms. Denise). The museum was very interesting because I saw a lot of new sea creatures that I didn’t know existed before, like those that produce the Whelk and helmet shells. While Jamin, Auntie, and I were walking along we met this nice lady and she described the history of her house and family. She told us where to find Blackbeard’s house and one of her favorite restaurants, No Name Pizza. We ended up walking around for a few hours until we found Blackbeard’s house and after that we were all very thirsty so we all walked to a dollar tree and mcdonalds to get some water and cold drinks. Overall, I’d say everyone enjoyed their day exploring, especially Ms. Denise, because she was beaming with joy by the end of the day.\

This is Blackbeard’s house which was built circa 1700's.

On our third day in Beaufort, we volunteered at Martha’s Mission Cupboard and we helped organize food into crates for those in need in the city Morehead. I didn’t realize there are so many people in different communities that need food. It felt good to do the volunteering because it always leaves me with a nice feeling after helping people. After that we went to a military base for a tour and to play football with some of the people that were working on base. Our tour guide Danny showed us around the base and when we were done looking around we went to the football field to have a cookout. The base itself really interested me because prior to entering it I had no clue that it had its own community, with houses, stores, and schools. We went to the base to have fun, learn what it’s like to be in the military, and give back to those who serve us. We all had a fantastic time and learned more about what it means to be in the military. Overall as a group everyone enjoyed the experience and would do it again.

During our final day in Beaufort we had our first performance review on the expedition. This is an evaluation on how the kids in the crew did over the week. After the reviews, Auntie, Kenny, and I went to do laundry. This took us about two hours to finish, and during that time I opened a roll of quarters and found a golden one. When laundry was done we made our way to MacDaddy’s Entertainment Center where we did two rounds of bowling and two races with go karts. Unfortunately, it took me until the end of the race to realize that my foot was partially on the break, which resulted in me ending up in last place. We are grateful to MacDaddys for their generosity and the fun we had.

The intense race at MacDaddy’s in which Jamin dusted everyone.

I am really looking forward to getting to New York in the next week because of all the different activities and sights that we get to do and see. I’m also extremely excited to see my dad whom I haven’t seen for almost a year. I really enjoyed my time in Beaufort because of the town itself. This little town is such a nice place filled with rich history. Fun fact: This is Blackbeard’s home town and they are still finding artifacts from his ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. See y’all in New York.

How to balance a feather on ur nose.
